Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to become creative and inspired by the arts. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art can be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom, who had a moral compass and urged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her family, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma inspired her later to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash inside the home that belonged to a member of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career as a publicist. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in small production studios right after college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of promotion and lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
